Swedish citizenship test 2026 – everything you need to know

From 6 June 2026, applicants for Swedish citizenship aged 16–66 must prove their knowledge of Swedish society – either with school grades or approved courses, or by taking the citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet). Here we explain who needs the test, when it is held, what it looks like and how to prepare.

Last updated: 29 October 2026

Do I have to take the test?

The requirement is to prove your knowledge of Swedish society – not necessarily to take the test. According to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) you can prove it with:

  • School grades
  • Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) course D
  • Municipal adult education (komvux)
  • A folk high school (folkhögskola)

If you cannot prove your knowledge in one of these ways, you are offered the citizenship test. The Migration Agency decides who may sit the test.

When and where is the test?

The next civics test is planned for April–May 2027; UHR has not yet announced the exact date, place or fee. You can only register if you have received a letter from the Migration Agency, and you must register again for every test date. The first test, a trial test (utprövningsprov), was held on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm with 875 participants. Results came on 22 October 2026: the pass mark was 28 of 40 points and about 80 percent passed. Results are sent automatically to the Migration Agency. The Swedish-language test was planned for 2027, but UHR has proposed postponing it to 2029; the government has not decided. The civics test is not affected.

What does the test look like?

  • Format: Multiple-choice questions with four options, one of which is correct.
  • Language: The test is in Swedish.
  • Number of questions and time: The first test had 60 questions in 90 minutes, on paper. 40 of them counted; the rest were being trialled. UHR has not yet published the format of the next test. Our exam simulation has 60 questions in 90 minutes.
  • Pass mark: 28 of 40 points (70 percent) on the first test. Sverigeklar's exam simulation uses the same level, 70 percent.

What should I study?

The test is based on the study book Sverige i fokus from UHR and Skolverket, which has 13 chapters. Sverigeklar has 725 questions based on it, each with an explanation in your language. Pick a chapter to see sample questions and key vocabulary:
